COALINGA'S 71ST ANNUAL HORNED TOAD DERBY

Coalinga's 71st Annual Horned Toad Derby is a family fun weekend that takes place over Memorial Day weekend, May 25 - 28 at Olsen Park, Polk and Garfield Streets, Coalinga. Planned activities for this year's event include live horned toad races, a Saturday parade, carnival, craft booths, food booths, chili cookoff, adult tricycle races, firemen's water fights, deep pit barbecue, a sanctioned softball tournament, and live entertainment. Admission to the event is free.

The first horned toad races were held in 1935 at the old Standard Oil picnic grounds in Warthan Canyon, just west of Coalinga, where Scout Troop #171 was holding a fund-raiser. They conceived the idea of capturing horned toads and racing them. In 1936, a community picnic gathering was held in Warthan Canyon and horned toad racing was once again a featured event. Everyone who attended enjoyed this entertainment pastime so much that it was destined to be repeated each succeeding year.

As the event has grown, there have been as many as 200 entries during a weekend of racing. Each horned toad has a number on it back to make identification easier. The crowd hoots and hollers for their favorites as each race begins. The toad which crosses over the circular finish line first is the winner. The fastest time is about 3 seconds with races taking several minutes if the horned toads refuse to budge when the starting gate is lifted.

You can get more information about this unique family event by call 935-2948 or (800) 854-3885. You can also find more information about the Derby on the internet at: http://www.coalingachamber.com/derbyinfo.html.
