HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL PROCEDURES

The proper disposal of household hazardous waste (HHW) is important to the health of the environment. To assist Fresno County residents with the proper disposal of HHW, drop-off events are conducted twice annually, once in the spring and once in the fall. During each semi-annual event, three drop-off sites are made available for Fresno County residents-one in the Fresno-Clovis Metropolitan Area and one in an east side and a west side city. There is no charge to participate in the event.

HHW accepted for disposal at the drop-off events include latex and oil-based paints, motor oil, cleaning products, TV sets and computer monitors*, pesticides and herbicides, photographic chemicals, household and automotive batteries, fluorescent lights, solvents, and "sharps" (needles and lancets). Small electrical and battery-operated appliances are also accepted. A maximum of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of HHW waste can be legally transported to the site for disposal.

Items not accepted for disposal are explosives, gun powder, ammunition, compressed gas cylinders, radioactive materials, medical waste (except for "sharps"), white goods, tires, reactives, asbestos, and non-hazardous waste.

In order for residents to avoid a lengthy wait in line to dispose of their items and to provide for the efficient processing of materials, the semi-annual HHW drop-off events are conducted on a reservation-only basis. For additional information about participating in the fall 2006 event, please call the Fresno County Department of Public Works and Planning, Resources Division, at 262-4259. You can also call this number to have your name placed on a notification list for an upcoming drop-off event and to inquire about disposal options for small businesses.

The HHW drop-off events are sponsored by the County of Fresno and 15 cities and coordinated by the Fresno County Department of Public Works and Planning, Resources Division.

*Watch for next month's issue of Network News for a list of recyclers accepting TV sets and computer monitors on an ongoing basis.
