AGENCY SPOTLIGHT

(This column features agencies or programs that are offered in Fresno County to assist people in meeting challenges they face. If you wish to have your agency and/or program featured in this column, please contact Lori Jacobsen at 488-3857.)

Valley Teen Ranch

Valley Teen Ranch is a private nonprofit corporation that has several different programs, which are licensed by the State of California Department of Social Services. We were incorporated in 1983 but actually began caring for boys in May 1987. The various components of our program include three residential group homes for 32 boys located on an 80 acre ranch in rural Madera county, a foster family agency, an adoption agency, a transitional living home and a bonding home. Each day we care for close to 80 children and youth in all of our programs.

The group homes are for boys only, ages 12-17. The foster family agency is for boys as well as girls from infants to age 17. Adoption is also for any age or gender. The transitional living home is for 4 men ages 18-24 who have aged out of residential care and are homeless. The bonding home is for infants to 3 years old foster children and provides and environment where they can have a supervised visit with their biological parent(s). All of our children and youth are referred to us through the court system, either from Child Protective Services or Probation.

We serve children from any county in the State, but preference is given to the San Joaquin Valley Counties. Currently we are working with 10 counties.

The mission of Valley Teen Ranch is to assist troubled young people and their families in rebuilding their lives through caring relationships and opportunities to grow mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually. Our motto is Building Young Lives.

Valley Teen Ranch is a replica of a program in Michigan called Teen Ranch that was founded by Ray Clendenan, my dad, in the 1960's. David Purvis is the founder of Valley Teen Ranch. I have been the CEO since 1989.

The thing that makes Valley Teen Ranch unique is that our group homes are located in the rural and spacious countryside. Our staff, board and foster parents are extremely dedicated and relational and we are faith-based and have an ongoing Development Department. All of our programs are therapeutic as well as relational. We are committed to the counseling and training of young people who have experienced social and emotional difficulties from abuse, neglect or delinquent behavior. Our goal is to return our kids to their homes or a foster home as an asset rather than a liability. Our philosophy is that a loving, stable family environment is the best way to accomplish these goals.

The kids usually stay with us from 12-18 months depending on their family circumstances and their willingness to make changes. They learn social skills, attend school every day and in many cases summer school and Sunday School, too. They have individual, group and family therapy on a regular basis, dealing with issues of anger, substance abuse, gangs, lying, grief, and loss. They also learn how to work, starting with basic chores to vocational jobs and ultimately a real paycheck getting (with taxes deducted) job. They have their physical needs attended to from the doctor, dentist, optometrist and any other physicians they need to see. They eat 3 balanced meals plus healthy snacks everyday. They participate in daily exercise, and have 8-10 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. They are supervised 24-7 and are living a safe and healthy life for the first time (for many of them).

2007 will mark our 20th anniversary of operation. We are planning to have a huge party to celebrate, including inviting all our alumni, former staff, Board Members, donors, friends, and neighbors to celebrate all the changed lives that have been impacted while being with us. There have been over 1000 kids in all of our programs in all of the VTR programs in the last 20 years.

There are opportunities for people to get involved with us as staff, volunteers, foster parents, donors, or prayer warriors. If you would like more information about us please go to our web site www.valleyteenranch.org or call us at (559) 437-1144.
