FRESNO TRAILS

With the beautiful spring weather we have finally started to experience, and with summer just around the corner, it seemed appropriate to include a write-up on a very important resource in this issue of Network News: Fresno County trails. Fresno County has quite an extensive offering of trails that can be used for many purposes.

Lewis S. Eaton Trail
This trail begins at the northwest corner of Woodward Park and runs along Friant Road. Some of the activities that may be enjoyed on this 4 mile trail include walking, running, cycling, horseback riding, and nature observation along the San Joaquin River. The trail is wheelchair accessible. The trail is equipped with restrooms and drinking fountains and provides the user with benches, bridges, trees, and beautiful scenic views.

Sugar Pine Trail
This trail begins at Fresno Street and Nees Avenue and runs along Friant Road turning east on Shepherd Avenue to Willow Avenue, continuing into the City of Clovis. This trail is paved and is suitable for activities such as walking, running, cycling, rollerblading, and horseback riding. The trail is wheelchair accessible and offers over 4,400 trees planted by 3,000 volunteers.

Camp Pashayan Nature Trail
This trail meanders along the banks of the San Joaquin River and continues on a full loop of Camp Pashayan and the adjacent ecological reserve. This trail provides opportunities for picnicking, fishing, boating, canoeing, and kayaking. Public restrooms are available.

Jensen Loop Trail
This trail is accessible from the Lewis S. Eaton trail onto the Jensen River Ranch, a 167-acre property owned by the San Joaquin River Conservancy. The River Parkway Trust is currently working on a restoration plan for the site that will include habitat restoration, a trail network and picnic sites near the river. The trail currently is suitable for walking, running, cycling, and horseback riding.

Taking advantage of the beautiful trail opportunities that Fresno County has to offer can be therapeutic recreation or simply a day of family fun. Call 621-2900 or visit http://www.fresno.gov/parks-rec/trails/default.asp for more information and for a map of the trails within the Fresno area.
